Calling Health Practitioners in the Moretonhampstead and Chagford Areas

Healthy Futures – Tuesday 11th November 2014 at St Andrew's Church, Moretonhampstead

Calling Moretonhampstead and Chagford health practitioners!

Moretonhampstead Action Group for Sustainability are helping to host a public meeting and talk about sustainable healthcare on Tuesday 11th November at St. Andrew's Church, Moretonhampstead. We aim to make the evening accessible to as many people as possible, so we are offering refreshments and free children's activities in The Yard Youth Club.

About our speakers: Dr Niall Macleod G.P. currently practices in Heavitree and has inspiring and innovative ideas about sustainable health care. Emma Bagwell is District Matron and manages the planning and provision of care for patients in the community.

The intentions of the talk are:
• to make a connection between the wider context of NHS Devon and what is happening in Moretonhampstead
• to provide information about the transformation of the Moretonhampstead Cottage Hospital into a Health Hub
• to encourage debate about the balance of preventive and acute healthcare within the NHS and our communities
• to get everyone interested in how this could affect the choices we make for the Health Hub
• to obtain feedback about what people want to see as part of the Health Hub.

You are invited to attend to hear the guest speakers, take part in the Q&A and, if you like, you are very welcome to arrive from 4:45pm and bring some information (for example, leaflets and display books) about your practice for a display table during the event.

The evening is planned as follows:
5pm Doors open at St Andrew's Church – all welcome for refreshments. Choice of seasonal veggie soup available for a £1 donation.
6pm Emma Bagwell: Introduction and update on the Health Hub
6:15pm Dr. Niall Macleod: Sustainable Healthcare
7pm Q&A

Free children's activities will be provided in The Yard at Green Hill (a neighbouring building to the Church) from 5 o'clock to 7:15.

If you would like to help us further please tell others about the evening.
Also, please let us know by the 1st November if you would like to display information about your practice so we can accommodate everyone. Email magsmoreton@gmail.com or get in touch through our Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Moretonhampstead-Action-Group-for-Sustainability-MAGS.

THANK YOU FOR FEASTING WITH US...Just in case you are not on our mailing list

Hello everyone

The MAGS committee would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to the very first MAGS event for two years, and the launch of Moretonhampstead Growing Together project. So many people generously gave time, energy, ideas and spare change (the costs of the event were covered) and between us all we made it a resounding success.

We shared a positive vision of how we would like the future of Moreton to be including more age-inclusive fun social events and more food grown!

There was lots of enthusiasm for all of the proposed Moretonhampstead Growing Together projects, and we'll keep you updated on progress. The projects are:
A community orchard
Hanging baskets, growing suitable edible plants, in town
More social events
MAGS to be involved in a Moretonhampstead community energy company.

We will be setting up an orchard working group and a hanging baskets group and we will be in touch with you about that.

The next event will probably be in the autumn - TBC
With the transformation of the Cottage Hospital into a Health Hub, MAGS is inviting Dr Macloud, an Exeter GP, to present a talk on sustainable Health Care which might give us some ideas about the sort of service we would like to see. He presented a similar talk to Transition Town Exeter a few months ago. Watch out for more details!

If you have ideas about the positive and practical changes you would like to see in Moreton, would you consider joining the MAGS committee? To find out more, chat to Astrid, Jane, Keith or Chrissy if you see one of us in Moreton, email magsmoreton@gmail.com or send a message through Facebook.

Please keep your ideas coming in and share our news and events with everyone. We are online at www.magsmoreton.blogspot.com andhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Moretonhampstead-Action-Group-for-Sustainability-MAGS.

You are all amazing – thank you for getting involved
Best wishes
The MAGS committee
Astrid Arnold, Jane Willis, Keith Morris and Chrissy Kebbell

PS We have some lost property left over from the Feast: some bowls and big plates that we are sure will be missed. Please let us know if you could be the owner of one of these! Also, a large steel bowl used for the smoothie fruit is missing, did anyone take it home by accident? Many thanks.

Bovey Tracey Community Garden at Parke Bovey Tracey

Have you been to Parke and walked around the fabulously productive community Garden?
This 'secret garden' is walled and wonderful. In July it is bursting with produce and vibrant mixed borders. Everywhere there are bees and butterflies and mini-beasts feasting noisily.

Park in the Parke car park and walk downhill and your left you will see the wooden door into the garden. It is not always open but there are peep holes.

http://www.boveycommunitygarden.org.uk/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bovey-Community-Garden/286119978084872

Picture
For many years the beautiful old walled garden at Parke had grown little more than brambles but now the National Trust and Bovey Climate Action have formed a partnership that has turned it into a community garden. In 2010, with the help from Countryside Stewardship funding, the National Trust restored the lime washed granite walls that enclose the garden, and replanted around twenty fruit trees, including figs, peaches, almonds, cherries and apricots, which are being trained up the walls to demonstrate pruning and cultivation techniques. An old well has been discovered and this has now been fitted with a solar powered water pump to supply the irrigation needs of the crops. The garden is open to anyone who would like to have a go at growing their own food; the project is about sharing knowledge and producing delicious, fresh produce to take home.
The Parke Estate, Dartmoor National Park, was originally owned by Major Hole prior to The National Trust, who have managed the house and grounds since 1976.
The main house is used as offices for The Dartmoor National Park Authority and the adjacent buildings are occupied by The National Trust.
